Who Are Licensing Executives?
Licensing executives are people engaged in the transfer, use, development, manufacture and marketing of intellectual property, known as "IP." They include a wide range of professionals, including business executives, lawyers, licensing consultants, engineers, academicians, scientists and government officials. These professionals represent large corporations, professional firms, and universities.
IP licensing is essentially "the business of ideas." It provides a business framework to broaden the commercialization of intellectual property and inventions. Three primary groups benefit from IP licensing:
- Inventors and the organizations they represent can be rewarded for their creativity and knowledge by "licensing out" their intellectual property.
- Businesses that purchase or "license in" intellectual property can use it to create better products and services.
- Consumers can access a broader range of products and services to improve their lives.
In the business world, IP licensing helps drive the return on investment from research and development. It is one way that businesses can turn ideas and inventions into profits, which in turn drive more innovation and inventions. Organizations in diverse fields such as high technology, healthcare, entertainment, and more engage in IP licensing.
In the academic world, IP licensing helps commercialize inventions created by universities, research institutions, teaching hospitals, and other institutions.
IP licensing is a growing business in the 21st century in the modern day information-based economy.
