10 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Spring Meeting
By Linda Corcoran

Get ready! The LES (USA & Canada) Spring Meeting and the 2008 International Conference—the first joint meeting of its kind— is coming to Chicago. Start by scouring your Meeting Brochure online at www.usa-canada.les.org/meetings/2008spring/. Then, get registered! Here are a few tips to consider for those who want to make the most of their Spring Meeting opportunity.

1. Listen to the leaders. That is, the Global Leaders of Corporate Licensing! Hear from our panel of some of the most successful and influential executives in the licensing world representing a cross section of Fortune 500 companies. Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn why their licensing programs are so successful, what challenges they face, and what they see as the future of licensing and new business models. Ask questions and get the answers in this exciting opening session.

2. Believe in Zeitgeist. It's not a figment of your imagination; it is the "spirit of the time." Find out more on Tuesday at the LES Zeitgeist program, which will highlight timely licensing issues and present a range of views designed to promote discussion among conference participants. Licensing Zeitgeist panelists will debate different models for licensing and IP commercialization, comparing obstacles and opportunities across regions, industries and jurisdictions.

3. Open your mind to possibilities. The theme of this year's Spring Meeting is "Licensing Without Borders." Look to discover more about licensing opportunities on a global scale. Learn how intellectual property is being developed and managed around the world. Mini-plenary sessions will address topics, such as " Industries Around the World: Where is the Grass Greener?" and " Regions of the World: Which is More Conducive to Licensing?" Get ready to open your mind to the vital role you play as a licensing professional in today's information economy.

4. Ask questions. Take an active role in participating. Learn from the plenary speakers and get involved in the LES International Conference workshops that will be taking place throughout the week. Attend the LES Global Tech Fair where you can meet potential partners and providers of innovative technology product and services. In addition, go to your Industry Sector and Working Group Meetings on Monday and the USA & Canada Committee Meetings on Tuesday. Interactive Roundtable discussions on Tuesday are the perfect venue for asking questions, collaborating on problem solving and delving deeper into hot topics.

5. Arrive early. Two Add-On Seminars are scheduled for Sunday, May 4. "Nanotechnology—Quality Patents for Licensing Purposes" and "Licensing's Key Role in Global Innovation" will provide full day, focused learning experiences. Each seminar is run by a diverse group of professionals representing leaders in their fields. In addition to arriving early, you should consider staying late. An additional Add-On Seminar, "The Business of Aging: Staying Young While Growing Older—Licensing the Future" is scheduled at the conclusion of the Spring Meeting on Thursday. This exciting seminar will provide important information not only on the aging process, but also what researchers are discovering on how to better maintain the mind and the body.

6. Feel the power. Register in advance for Power Networking. You can determine which other meeting participants you would like to network with and all arrangements will be made prior to your arrival in Chicago. Once on site, you'll receive a schedule and reminders via an electronic message board, as well as access to a comfortable networking lounge area. Now that's a more managed, more streamlined and much more effective way to network!

7. Think globally. There are no boundaries to the information and collaboration that you can garner at this dynamic meeting, which brings together members of LES (USA & Canada) with those from LES International. "The LESI Conference moves around the globe, the last one hosted in the U.S. was in 1991 in San Diego. This was in conjunction with our Annual Meeting," states Conference Chair Jim Sobieraj. In addition to being quite unique, the Chicago Spring Meeting will have a totally international slant featuring networking opportunities with people from around the globe welcomed by LESI President Chikao Fukuda.

8. Laugh out loud. How funny can licensing be? It's the Second City comedy revue specifically written and performed for LES. Monday's luncheon presentation is an opportunity to laugh with Chicago's landmark comedy group, which has launched the careers of such greats as John Belushi, Mike Myers, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner. Think of it as happy hour leading up to Monday night's reception and dinner at the Museum of Science & Industry. Foods from various Chicago neighborhoods will be on the menu.

9. Support the students. See what the future of licensing looks like through the eyes of the students participating in the 2008 Licensing Foundation Graduate Student Licensing Competition. For the first time, the competition is adding some international teams to the mix. Be there as five finalist teams present their business plans and compete for a $10,000 award and in-kind prizes worth up to $45,000. Go team!

10. Discover Chicago! This cosmopolitan city on the shores of Lake Michigan is one-of-a-kind. Experience the Chicago Clubs without leaving the Sheraton at our closing event, Chicago Nightlife Dinner & Entertainment. Bring along a guest and enjoy one of the many accompanying persons tours, from a "Chicago Blues Tour" to the "Architectural L Train Tour." Stay at the award-winning Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers (www.sheratonchicago.com), centrally located and perfect for making the most of your experience at the LES Spring Meeting & LES International Conference.
