A Traveler’s Guide To LES Local Chapters
By Linda Corcoran

The Midwest is a popular destination for many summer travelers. Crisscrossing the country's heartland can take you from historical sites to rural farm areas and through big cities. While traveling along a scenic byway, why not contact an LES Local Chapter Chair? They'll be glad to extend a warm Midwest welcome to you.

Kansas City Here I Come
Kansas CityLet's start our journey in the heart of America's heartland—Kansas City, known as "The City of Fountains." The city's downtown area has recently undergone major redevelopment with a new Sprint Center arena, an upgraded Convention Center and expansion of its Performing Arts Center. Nighttime brings "all that jazz" with more than 20 local nightclubs. By day, the city is home to four Fortune 500 Companies: H & R Block, Embarq Corporation, Sprint Nextel Corporation and YRC Worldwide Inc.

Stop in at a Kansas City Region Chapter Meeting and you'll find a diverse group of professionals representing universities, private inventors, pharma and bio research, hard goods, financial services, legal, and other IP related support services. The Chapter holds meetings five times per year, usually in a central location and at an evening hour. Lately, the law firm of Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus PC has provided LES with use of their conference center for meetings.

Chapter Chair Rob Nelsen states the defined role of the Kansas City Chapter, "To inform the business community, economic development agencies and governmental and educational bodies of the economic significance and the importance of licensing, other transfers of technology, intellectual property rights, and the high professional standards of those engaged in the profession."

If you find yourself where the Missouri and Kansas rivers come together, contact Rob Nelsen, Robert_Nelson@ge.com and find out more about this active local chapter.

Chicago, It's My Kind of Town
Let's travel from Kansas City across the Iowa plains to view the spectacular skyscrapers of Chicago, the largest city in the Midwest. This is the perfect place to grab a bite to eat, like Chicago's famous deep-dish pizza or the Chicago hot dog. Now you've got the energy to walk "The Magnificent Mile" and shop to your heart's content.

ChicagoEvery other month, you'll find 40-50 Chicago Local Chapter members gathered for lunch and a meeting, usually at the popular Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant. Attendees hail from biotech, pharma, chemical, high tech, nanotech, legal, accounting/valuation and consumer products industries. Chapter Chair Pamela Cox credits Chicago's meeting successes to "outstanding speakers who are happy to donate their time to our local chapter." She adds, " Each of our meetings has a speaker and we try to have an overall theme or progression throughout the year so that we can touch on multiple aspects of the practice that are of interest to our practitioners." Recent topics have included " How to Draft an Effective ADR Clause and Avoid Arbitration Clause Disasters" and "Powerful Negotiation Skills."

Take a train, plane or automobile to land in the Land of Lincoln and visit Chicago. Contact Chapter Chair Pamela Cox at pcox@marshallip.com.

The Heart of Rock ‘N Roll is in Cleveland
From the shores of Lake Michigan to Lake Erie, we arrive in Cleveland. The city's comeback is evidenced in major league stadiums, a lakefront Science Center and the shimmering silhouette of Clevelandthe Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. LES Cleveland Chapter is experiencing an upswing as well. Late last year, Chapter Co-Chairs Stephen Weeks and Greg Wilson decided to look ahead to 2007 and create a master plan to include five chapter meetings. The move brought new energy to a chapter that had been almost dormant over the last few years.

Most meetings are held near Cleveland State University at the Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network (MAGNET). A recent breakfast meeting was held at The Great Lakes Innovation and Development Enterprise (GLIDE) on the Lorain Community College campus. Meeting organizer Mike Allan, explains, "We try to bring in local economic development organizations and invite them as speakers." The next local chapter meeting is planned for September.

To attract attendees, meeting organizers cast a wide net that has brought in professionals from other areas of the state, such as Columbus and Toledo. Local membership has a good representation from professional groups, patent law firms (reflecting Cleveland's vibrant legal community) and consultants.

Chapter Co-Chair Steve Weeks is always looking for new ideas to strengthen the chapter. If you roll into town, perhaps to witness the big bats of the Cleveland Indians or the winning prowess of the Cavs, contact Steve at spweeks@firstprincipals. com to see what's rockin' with LES Cleveland
