This month's feature Oh Canada! LES Annual Meeting Takes A Global View LES Annual Meeting • Vancouver • October 14-17, 2007
This year's meeting theme, "The New Deal: Competing in a Global Economy," will focus on "Change" taking place throughout today's global marketplace for intellectual property protection, transfer and licensing. Innovative programming and unique networking events will mark this year's Annual Meeting as changed to meet the evolving needs and interests of licensing professionals. In its ruling, the Supreme Court addressed the leap from what is known to
what is patentable—what would have been obvious from the prior work
of others. In recognizing the challenge, the Court stated,
"In many fields there may be little discussion of obvious techniques
or combinations, and market demand, rather than scientific literature, may
often drive design trends." Sector Spotlight Traditional economic theory has maintained that humans and their organizations
are rational decision-making entities, that each individual (and organization)
has a clear sense of his own preferences, tries to maximize his own well being,
and makes consistent choices over time. The decision maker evaluates the reward
and the probability of the reward for each choice, in a deliberative calculation
of utility. Chemicals, Energy and Materials Sector Many of the leading topics in today's energy world will wrap up in one exciting
day. The focus is innovation from intellectual assets and ways of creating
value propositions using intellectual property. Book Review Are You Ready To Be A Deviant? The Deviant's Advantage offers readers a compelling look at how ideas, individuals, innovations, and events have made their way from the fringe of society to accepted social convention (or mass market) and how you and your business can benefit from taking a deviant approach to remain competitive in today's ever changing world. The authors, Watts Wacker and Ryan Mathews, are futurists, often hired by
companies to assist them in taking a deviant approach to determine how they
can stay viable and competitive for years to come. Their book is based on
their beliefs that, (1) "deviation is the ultimate source of growth
and innovation," and (2) "changes in society drive changes in business,
and that as society becomes more and more deviant, businesses in turn have
to become more deviant to prosper, even survive." SAVE THE DATE! |
