Power Networking: A Strong Success With Key Lessons Learned

Power Networking made its debut at the LES (USA & Canada) Annual Meeting in Vancouver. Just how did it work? Meeting registrants determined which participants they would like to network with. Pre-arranged meetings were set up with the help of our partner, Technology Vision Group, and participants were notified via e-mail and an electronic message board system.

Thanks to a number of new sponsors, all Power Networking costs were covered. LES Trustee Pamela Demain was instrumental in planning this new, systematic channel for networking. "I would like to thank the sponsors of Power Networking. Without their support this important program wouldn’t be included in the cost of the meeting," states Pam.

Over 3,800 meeting requests and nearly 1,000 Power Networking meetings were scheduled throughout the Annual Meeting. So, what did participants think? An online survey was sent to 1,032 meeting registrants. With a strong participation across sectors for both new and experienced members, 138 participants responded. Results of the survey are listed below.

Spring Meeting + LES International
"Licensing Without Borders" is coming to Chicago! This unique event will be built on the dynamic combination of the LES (USA & Canada) Spring Meeting and the 2008 International Conference—the first joint meeting of its kind. The meeting celebrates the fact that the world, indeed, is getting smaller. Or to place it in the realm of licensing, professionals are frequently called upon to develop and manage intellectual property around the globe, practicing in a world with few borders or boundaries to information and collaboration.

LES International President, Chikao Fukuda, along with LES President, Thomas Picone, and 2008 International Conference Chair, James Sobieraj, will open the meeting with a gracious invitation for all to be part of this one-of-a-kind experience. The international flavor of the programming will address the latest developments in licensing legal and business issues around the world. Networking will also get a boost from the mingling of international attendees with LES members. Sunday night’s Welcome Reception has been duly dubbed "The LES World’s Fair."

Should you join LinkedIn or update contact information with Plaxo?

Here's more information to help you decide, especially since the Health Care sector is trialing the use of LinkedIn for enhancing industry sector networking.

What is LinkedIn?
LinkedIn is a business-oriented networking site (comparable to a social networking site), mainly used for professional networking. As of December 2007, it had more than 17 million registered users. The main purpose of the site is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. The people in the list are called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a LinkedIn user or not) to become a connection.

What is Plaxo?
Plaxo is an online address book service that provides automatic updating of contact information. Users and their contacts store their information on Plaxo's servers. When this information is edited by the user, the changes appear in the address books of all those who listed the account changer in their own books. Once contacts are stored in the central location, it is possible to list connections between contacts and access the address book from anywhere.
If anyone has experience with these services, let us know; send comments to info@les.org.
