LES International Americas Connect With New Collaboration
By John Paul

The LESI Americas and LES (USA & Canada) International Committees are connected in a North-South collaboration to send North American business people to meet with Latin American business people at LES meetings in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Mexico. The delegations will discuss potential business opportunities and other licensing issues in those countries.

This program follows the Special Americas Program of last year, which brought delegates from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Mexico, and the United States to meet in New York. Their purpose was to explore opportunities for networking and build possible business relationships between Latin American business people and companies in the United States, including Avalon Pharmaceuticals, Du- Pont Chemical, Schering-Plough, and Air Products and Chemicals, among others.

Programs to be held at the 2008 LES Spring Meeting in Chicago and the Annual Meeting in Orlando are being jointly planned by the LESI Americas and LES International Committees. In Chicago, Dr. Sergio Trindade, an internationally recognized expert in the field of alternative and renewable fuels, will speak on significant Brazilian developments in Biofuels during the Alternative Fuels Mini-Plenary Session (Chemicals and Materials Sector). Lucas Ribeiro from Promon Engineering will also lead a workshop on Developments in Biofuels and Renewable Energy. And, speakers from Universities and Industry—Isabel Reveco from CONICYT, Claudio Rabuco from CTI Saklud S.A., and Vitor Aguilera from 3IE, Universidade Tecnica Federico Santa Maria—will conduct a workshop on New Ways to Jump-Start Innovation, Patenting and University-Industry Collaboration. Plans for the Orlando meeting are also coming along well. The committees are in the process of arranging a Latin American speaker for the Global Titans of Licensing and M&A plenary, as well as planning several workshops.

The vitality of these committees stems from many active members spread among countries throughout the Americas. If anyone is interested in joining the committees, or being a delegate in the North-South program, please contact the LES Administrative Office or the Committee Co-Chairs, John Paul and Catherine Jelinek.
