Local Chapters Celebrate the Holidays

Boston
At the Boston Chapter's December Event, panelists answered many questions posed about the changing patent law landscape in recent months. The panelists included:

  • Donna M. Meuth, Counsel, WilmerHale
  • Lita L. Nelsen, Director, MIT Technology Licensing Office
  • Michael T. Siekman, Shareholder, Wolf Greenfield
  • John Stickevers, Partner, Bromberg & Sunstein LLP

Two of the panelists discussed the USPTO rules in the aftermath of the injunction, and the other two covered the key components of the patent reform legislation that impact licensing.

The program entitled, "The Three "R's" of the Brave New World of Patents: Rules, Reform and Reflections," was sponsored by Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C. Thirty-five attendees participated in networking prior to presentations and a lively discussion afterwards on the material presented by the panelists.

Chicago
At this final 2007 Chicago Chapter Meeting, out-going Chair Pamela Cox of Marshall, Gerstein & Borun, LLP welcomed incoming Chair Russell Garrison from Stepan Company.

Icy travels did not damper speaker Jill Sorenson's enthusiasm to share IDEX Health's approach to nonprofit technology transfer which screens for unmet needs across science, patent and market knowledge domains to identify intellectual property sourcing, bundling and creation opportunities. This independent, data-driven technology assessment and gap analysis is already proving successful in several projects in the life sciences.

The Maryland and District of Columbia Chapters held another of their very successful holiday networking events this year. This joint event has become a holiday tradition for Chapter members and guests, who enjoyed great networking, excellent catered food and drinks, and piano entertainment with seasonal selections, all in the festive setting of the lovely ca. 1854 Savage Mill Manor House.

The highlight of the evening was a presentation by Joe Allen, the key Senate Judiciary Committee staffer securing passage of the Bayh-Dole Act, who shared his unique insights on Bayh-Dole and federal technology transfer. Not to be outdone, Wes Blakeslee, Director of Technology Transfer at Johns Hopkins (and an event sponsor), led the group in an impromptu caroling session to cap the evening's festivities."

New Jersey
The much anticipated 11th Annual Holiday Event, presented by the New Jersey Local Chapter, experienced a great turnout of 120 guests. Linda Webb did it again, organizing the event with endless food and drink throughout the evening. LES President Tom Picone welcomed the guests and to Linda's surprise led everyone singing a round of Happy Birthday.

Magician Chad Juros wowed the crowd with his amazing slight-of-hand magic as he strolled around and performed close-up to pockets of guests who could barely believe their eyes. Guests also enjoyed live music by Tomoko Ohno's jazz ensemble.
