Power Networking: A Strong Success With Key Lessons Learned

Power Networking made its debut at the LES (USA & Canada) Annual Meeting in Vancouver. Just how did it work? Meeting registrants determined which participants they would like to network with. Pre-arranged meetings were set up with the help of our partner, Technology Vision Group, and participants were notified via e-mail and an electronic message board system.

Thanks to a number of new sponsors, all Power Networking costs were covered. LES Trustee Pamela Demain was instrumental in planning this new, systematic channel for networking. "I would like to thank the sponsors of Power Networking. Without their support this important program wouldn’t be included in the cost of the meeting," states Pam.

Over 3,800 meeting requests and nearly 1,000 Power Networking meetings were scheduled throughout the Annual Meeting. So, what did participants think? An online survey was sent to 1,032 meeting registrants. With a strong participation across sectors for both new and experienced members, 138 participants responded. Results of the survey are listed below.

  • 47% participated in 1 to 5 meetings
  • 48% responded that Power Networking added high value to the Annual Meeting
  • 39% felt that the organizational aspect was very helpful; 43% marked somewhat helpful
  • 61% would be more likely to attend an Annual Meeting due to Power Networking
  • 89% want it available at the 2008 LESI/LES Spring Meeting

Feedback from Power Networking participants included, "Expand the time slots to cover later in the day," and "Use small cubicles instead of open tables." Another LES member commented, "This is a great addition. In an effort to continue this very positive step forward, please consider additional computer stations and tables for meetings." Pam Demain and partners are considering all comments as they plan to improve the program in 2008 with earlier registration and broader communication to build awareness.
