Julius Vida, Ph.D., has spent a significant part of his career dedicated to the field of licensing. Since 1993, Dr. Vida has been a self-employed pharmaceutical consultant with VIDA International Pharmaceutical Consultants. At the LES Winter Meeting in San Francisco, the LES Foundation honored Dr. Vida as the newest recipient of the annual Frank Barnes Mentor Award.

Throughout his long association with LES, Dr. Vida has mentored many younger LES members. The relationship usually begins with a first meeting at an LES annual or seasonal meeting and continues with follow-up discussions after the meeting has ended.

"It [mentoring] is important because there are a number of older generation licensing executives who understand how to overcome problems in licensing negotiations," says Dr. Vida. "The younger generation may not know how to overcome these hurdles. Mentoring can make significant contributions to the art of discussion and negotiation."

The Frank Barnes Mentor Award is an annual award given to a deserving executive, who has, like Frank Barnes, mentored many licensing executives. Frank Barnes, Corporate Vice President at Abbott Labs, passed away in June 2000 after a long fight with cancer. He was known throughout the industry as one of the Deans of Pharma Licensing and was an early supporter of LES in the Pharma Industry. He was responsible for mentoring nearly twenty licensing executives, who have made important contributions throughout the Pharma Industry.
